Trip Overview
The Upper Mustang Trek is one of those treks that lead you to one of the least accessible and culturally vibrant areas of the country, popularly known as the Last Forbidden Kingdom. It is a part of the trans-Himalayan area with an enticing combination of breathtaking views and age-old Tibetan culture. Unlike other treks that take travellers through lush green trails, Upper Mustang is bare, with an arid, almost desert-like terrain, vivid red cliffs, and, apart from that, very peculiar rock formations accompanying the trek. Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days takes you through medieval monasteries, ancient caves, and traditional villages, all within sight of the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
This particular area of trekking is accessible through special permits because it is restricted, but it gives you a truly personal experience of timeless beauty and heritage in Mustang. Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days includes the walled city of Lo Manthang, the cultural and spiritual heart of Mustang where it flows from Jomsom through the world’s deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki. Trekkers are treated to the hospitality of warm local folks whose architecture is Tibetan-style and livened with bright prayer flags set against the fabulous backdrop of rich spirituality in the region.
Preparation for Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days
Permits and Regulations
To set on your journey to Upper Mustang Trek, you must first prepare and trekking permits come second to none. There are three required permits for this trek; A Special Mustang Trek Permit, an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP permit), and a Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) permit.
A Special Mustang Trek Permit has the price of USD 50 per person per day
Similarly, Annapurna conservation area project (ACAP permit) costs NPR 3000 for foreign trekkers and NPR 1000 for SAARC Nationals. Last but not least, Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) Card has the price of NPR 3000 per person.
You can get all required permits from Nepal Tourism Board before the start of your journey.
Guides and Porters during Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days
For Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days, it will be advised to hire well-experienced guides and porters. And you do not have to worry about hiring them since Mountain Treks Nepal has got them covered. These experts will share more while guiding them through their immersion in the culture, geography, and history of the region. In remote areas where the trail might become unclear, people rely on these guides to navigate through the paths. Government-licensed guides offer safety and the benefits of local customs and traditions knowledge.
Porters carry the entire heavy load throughout the Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days. Their effort transforms a trekker’s trip into a true journey. It is also mandatory to hire guides and porters for remote trekking in Nepal as governed by the Nepal Tourism Board. All in all, hiring guides and porters will help you with safe navigation and give you the opportunity to enjoy the Upper Mustang Trek to the fullest.
Trek Difficulty and Fitness Preparation
The Upper Mustang Trek is considered a moderate trek. It does not require technical climbing skills or mountaineering experience, but it does require good stamina, steady walking ability and mental readiness for high-altitude travel.
The main challenges are not steep climbs alone. The dry air, strong winds, uneven trails, cold mornings and altitude can make a normal walking day feel more demanding. Trekkers should be comfortable walking for several hours each day with a small daypack.
We recommend preparing at least 6–8 weeks before the trek. Regular walking, hiking on hills or stairs, light jogging, cycling and leg-strength exercises can help improve endurance. Breaking in your trekking boots before arrival is also essential to reduce the risk of blisters.
This trek is suitable for first-time trekkers who are physically active, well-prepared and willing to walk at a slow, steady pace. Our guides support you throughout the journey and adjust the walking pace according to the group’s condition.
Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization
Upper Mustang is a high-altitude trek, with Lo Manthang located at approximately 3,840 m. Some sections and side trips reach close to 4,000 m. Although the route is moderate in difficulty, altitude should always be taken seriously.
Our itinerary is designed with gradual elevation gain and includes enough time in Lo Manthang for exploration and acclimatization. We encourage trekkers to walk slowly, drink enough water, eat properly and listen to their bodies throughout the trek.
Headache, tiredness, nausea, dizziness or loss of appetite can be early signs that your body needs more rest. Inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell. Our guides monitor the group carefully and make decisions based on safety, not speed.
Travel insurance with high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended for this trek.
Altitude Chart

The altitude chart for the Upper Mustang Trek (14 Days) showcases a dramatic and unique elevation profile, shifting from low-altitude valleys to a vast, high-desert plateau. The journey commences on Day 1 at Kathmandu (1,400m) before dipping down to Pokhara at 820m. A sharp, near-vertical ascent occurs on Day 2 as the route transitions via Jomsom to Kagbeni at 2,800m, climbing steadily further to Chele at 3,050m by Day 3. Day 4 introduces a rugged, jagged sequence of climbs through mountain passes, scaling Taklam La (3,735m) and Darjori La (3,800m) to reach Syangmoche. The trek reaches its absolute highest peak on Day 5 at Nyi La Pass (4,010m).
Following this peak, the profile settles into a high-altitude plateau, dropping slightly to Ghami (3,520m) and Charang (3,560m) before ascending again via Lo La Pass (3,950m) to reach the walled capital of Lo Manthang at 3,840m. Days 8 and 9 maintain this high elevation, featuring an exploration loop to Chhoser Cave (3,900m) and a trek to Dhakmar (3,820m). From Day 10 onward, the chart illustrates a steady, continuous descent through Ghiling (3,570m) and Chuksang (2,980m), dropping back down to the windy valley floor of Jomsom at 2,720m on Day 12. The trek concludes symmetrically with a steep drop back to Pokhara (820m) on Day 13 and a final return drive back to Kathmandu (1,400m) on Day 14.
Best Time for Upper Mustang Trek
The best time for the Upper Mustang Trek is from March to November. Unlike many trekking regions in Nepal, Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain-shadow area, making it one of the best destinations for monsoon trekking as well.
Spring (March to May) offers pleasant temperatures, clearer mornings and colourful landscapes. This is also a wonderful period for travellers interested in Mustang’s culture and traditional festivals.
Summer and monsoon (June to August) can be an excellent time to trek in Upper Mustang because the region receives much less rainfall than other parts of Nepal. The surrounding landscape becomes more vibrant, while trails in Everest and Annapurna may receive heavy rain.
Autumn (September to November) offers stable weather, clear mountain views and comfortable trekking conditions. It is one of the most popular periods for the Upper Mustang Trek.
Winter trekking from December to February is possible only with careful planning, but cold temperatures, strong winds, snow and possible flight delays can make the journey more challenging.
Accommodation and Food
Talking about the accommodation facilities during the Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days, the region has only teahouses and localized lodges, which are nice-but-simple. The tea houses and lodges usually have very simple rooms with twin beds and shared bathrooms. A common area on the premises invites the traveler to spend time with another tired trekker. It is advisable to carry personal sleeping bags especially when it is a cold season.
Tea houses and lodges offer a variety of local and international foods. A staple food is “dal bhat,” which basically contains rice, lentil soup, and vegetable curry, all nutritious yet filling. There is the Western-styled pasta, noodles, pancakes, and even more, but at a point when you start climbing higher, the selection tends to get thinner. Most importantly, eat well-cooked food and drink only boiled bottled water to avoid any health hazards during the trek.
Communication and Internet during Upper Mustang Trek
The remoteness of the Upper Mustang Trek 14 Days greatly limits communication. Cellular networks like Ncell and NTC cover the region partially, with better signals in bigger settlements, such as Kagbeni and Lo Manthang, whereas more distant areas enjoy poorer service.
Wi-Fi services are available in almost all tea houses and hotel lodges, but quite often at slow speed and at a small price for usage. Obtaining a local SIM card with a data pack would offer more reliable connectivity other than during the trek; this could go a long way in enriching what is surely a limited experience. Besides, you also can carry a satellite phone for undisturbed connectivity.
Travel Insurance
Trekking in the Upper Mustang Region requires travel insurance to cover the risk of injuries, diseases, and emergencies from high altitude. Given such isolated place conditions, getting a policy covering helicopter evacuation is vital as medical facilities are not easily accessible. Also ensure that your policy also covers high-altitude trekking since Upper Mustang is above 3700 meters.
On the other hand, when subscribing to the policy, take time to peruse the coverage details to ascertain that it covers trip cancellation, theft, and other unexpected events. Always carry printed copies of your travel insurance certificate and emergency contact numbers. Travel agencies also require proof of travel insurance before the start of the trekking expedition, making this an absolute necessity for a safe and worry-free trip.

Detailed Itinerary
The journey to the Upper Mustang trek starts with 7 hours of journeying through scenic Kathmandu to Pokhara. The route goes along lush hillsides with terraced farmlands and pretty villages, offering glimpses of Nepal’s rural charm. Much of the route follows the Trishuli and Marsyangdi River, adding a fairy-tale consideration to the drive. The towering Annapurna and Machhapuchhre start coming into view as you near this city.
Pokhara is often called the gateway to the Annapurna region and draws travelers for its serene atmosphere. You can spend the evening at the enchanting Phewa Lake, where the snow-capped peaks cast their reflections in the clear waters. A quiet evening like this would be the best beginning for the adventure of trekking. Overnight stay at a hotel in Pokhara.
On the second day of the Upper Mustang Trek, you will fly from Pokhara to Jomsom. It is the perfect flight for experiencing a bird’s-eye view of the mighty Himalayan range in which all of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and the Nilgiri peaks. It displays the beauty of this short but wonder-filled flight and the dramatic Kali Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. After landing at Jomsom, the trekking adventure will set in with a 3-hour hike to Kagbeni, located at 930 meters.
Kagbeni is an awesome settlement in the suburbs of the Upper Mustang area, which combines charms in its ancient architecture, prayer flags, and chortens. You’ll also find yourself walking through dry stretches of land peppered by apple orchards and traditional settlements when you walk along the Kali Gandaki River. This is the ideal first hand experience of Upper Mustang.
From Kagbeni, the trail goes up steeper into Chele by 3050 meters above sea level, taking in 6 hours of dry, wind-swept landscape characteristic of Upper Mustang. The way is marked with narrow ridges, cliffs, and, at times, hearing the Kali Gandaki River far below. Meanwhile, as you continue on your journey, the views of Nilgiri and Tilicho Peak will grow more vivid and reassuring about the harsh terrain of the region.
This route will take you through typical villages like Tangbe, famous for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and buckwheat and barley fields. Chele, a small village embraced by rocky cliffs, shows some of the very old culture and architecture of the Mustang region. Resting here will make you feel the stillness of this remote Himalayan settlement.
On the fourth day of the Upper Mustang Trek, you will hike from Chele to Syangmoche, which is an interesting 6-hour walk through diverse landscapes. You will cross suspension bridges across deep and steep ascents and the steepest, descending again and again. During the journey, you will come across the high pass called Taklam La Pass (3,624 m), which is one of the major attractions of today’s journey.
It also boasts views encompassing the various Himalayan ranges and Mustang’s plains, known for being very arid. The journey has been quite in itself, completed with prayer flags and ancient chortens reflecting deep-rooted spirituality within it. After a few hours of push, you will finally reach scenic Syangmoche village, where the quietude promises captivating views of snow-peaked summits. Well, its serenity and lingering traditionalism indeed make it a perfect spot for charging up for the remaining journey.
This 5-hour walk is from Syangmoche to Ghami, the second largest village in Upper Mustang and located at 3500 m. The whole route is covered with mani walls showing the longest of all the oldest mani walls in Mustang. You will pass through the trail featuring carvings of Buddhist prayers – these religious sites lend a very strong historical and cultural context to the traveling experience.
The trail, of course, offers phenomenal views across the Annapurna and Nilgiri ranges, which change when approaching Ghami to terraced fields and traditional stone houses. The village, with its ancient monasteries and serene feeling, is a fine blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
The visit to Charang from Ghami takes around four hours, which we will be covering on today’s journey. It really is a short journey, however, culturally and scenically rewarding. The Tsarang La Pass (3870 m) during the journey has a panoramic view of the rugged terrain of the Mustang region with a far-off sight of the snow-capped peaks.
Charang is a very ancient town and is known for its gigantic white dzong (fort) and red monastery. The combination of ancient architecture and the monastery’s really detailed artwork makes Charang an important cultural highlight of the trek. You can explore the narrow streets and the village’s amenities for the whole afternoon. Overnight stay at Charang in a local tea house.
The seventh day of the Upper Mustang Trek brings us into one of the major highlights of this journey. We again trek for five hours and reach the historical walled city of Lo Manthang, standing firm at an altitude of 3770 meters above sea level. This walk includes panoramic views of the Himalayas and the almost arid-looking landscapes of Upper Mustang. Chortens and mani walls characterize the way to add the spiritual aspect.
Lo Manthang was once the capital of the Kingdom of Mustang and is now a veritable treasure hub of history and culture. The mud-brick houses, the wall caves and the royal palace create an atmosphere of timelessness. It houses ancient monasteries such as the Thubchen and the Jampa Lhakhang that have exquisite murals and sculptures.
After exploring Lo Manthang, overnight stay at a local lodge.
On this very day, you will spend exploring the mythical Chhoser Cave, which consists of many artificially created caves within cliffs near Lo Manthang. These caves are said to have been used by hermits for meditative escapes and taken up residence hundreds of years ago. The trek to Chhoser dazzles one with beautiful views of dry, nearly lifeless Mustang contrasted by the vibrant prayer flags that dot the trail.
Inside, the caves will be admired by anyone for their wonderful designs and rich history. And after coming back here, spend the evening discovering even more about this unique culture and practice.
Today, you will hike for seven hours from Lo Manthang to Dhakmar, situated at an altitude of about 3800 m. Along with the beautiful display of some of the finest scenery around Upper Mustang, this particularly shows the imposing red cliffs of Dhakmar.
The trail offers both rugged climbs and lovely descents, scattered by plenty of chortens and ancient ruins. With dramatic landscapes surrounding it, Dhakmar is a little village, giving an impression of being a very good place to recompose energies after an exhausting trek. Though the trek time is a little long, the natural beauty of the surroundings will keep you entertained for sure. Overnight stay at a local tea house at Dhakmar.
The tenth day of the Upper Mustang Trek will begin with a warm breakfast at Dhakmar. After breakfast, you will be set on a journey that covers 6 hours through Ghiling, which is at an altitude of 3860 meters. The route runs through hushed landscapes, and you will come across lonely chortens and mani walls on the way that somehow lends a spiritual feel to the journey.
Ghiling enjoys being a quiet village known for the view it has across the surrounding peaks as well as traditional stone houses. It is a perfect place to relax after a day’s trek because of how quiet it is.
As the morning begins with a warm breakfast at Ghiling, a hike of 6 hours leads to Chuksang, resting at 3050 meters and sounding a little slower as one finally breaks out of Upper Mustang. The scenery becomes greener, with glimpsed images of the Kali Gandaki River once in a while.
Chuksang, an old village, offers you with its splendid feel of traditional architecture and bright prayer flags. Then, one can rest on the great journey to the hidden kingdom of Mustang.
This is almost the last part of the Upper Mustang Trek. An early morning hike will take you on a five-hour journey to Jomsom, situated at 2715 meters. The path leads you again along the Kali Gandaki River in what might be the last chance to behold the marvelous sceneries of the region. Along the way, you can experience Buddhist culture showcased in the form of mani walls and prayer flags.
Jomsom is bustling with a bazaar set against the backdrop of Upper Mustang. You can rest here enjoying a warm meal and celebrating the completion of the Upper Mustang Trek. Overnight stay at a lodge in Jomsom.
Today, we will return to Pokhara on a flight from Jomsom. This 15-minute flight from Jomsom to Pokhara offers the traveler one final aerial view of the magnificent Himalayas. It is the last stage in the art of adventure and satisfies any ambitions logistically interpreted from a bird’s eye view of the tracks traversed-the most striking ones at once.
The gentle atmosphere of Pokhara simply makes you feel good. Upon arriving at Pokhara, you can spend time either relaxing around Lakeside or enjoying the peaceful views of Phewa Lake after sunset.
As your Upper Mustang Trek is now completed, it’s time to get back to Kathmandu. You will catch an early morning bus from Pokhara Bus Station and head to the capital city in a 6 to 7 hours drive.
This drive takes you through the settlements of Tanahun and Dhading District, alongside Marsyangdi and Trishuli River.
Upon arriving at Kathmandu, you will check in to your hotel, where you will rest overnight.

March 14, 2026 at 11:40 pmAn Amazing Family Experience
My husband and I completed the Upper Mustang Trek with our adult son, and it became one of our favorite family holidays.
The Mountain Treks Nepal team paid attention to every detail before and during the trek. The manager answered all of our questions promptly before we arrived in Nepal, which gave us confidence in our booking.
Our guide was experienced, kind, and very informative. He introduced us to local families, explained the history of the region, and helped us discover places we would have otherwise walked past.
Upper Mustang is truly a magical destination, and this short itinerary was ideal for travelers with limited time. We are already planning another adventure in Nepal with Mountain Treks Nepal.

October 14, 2022 at 10:54 pmA friend and I recently returned from a mountain tour of Nepal in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal in April.
This is my second time to participate in Nepal mountain tour and trekking to the Upper Mustang area. I found all my trips to be well organized by the Mountain treks Nepal Team and everything went surprisingly smoothly.
During my recent trip, I contacted Mountain treks Nepal , Mr. Bharat. I wanted a trip that was different from my last trip. Therefore, I decided to trek to the area on the east side of the Kali Gandaki River. All my queries were resolved via the emails within a short time. He also gave me a customized itinerary and quoted a price. I accepted his proposed program as it met all our requirements in a reasonable price.
For Upper Mustang Trek, a guide was must and Mountain treks nepal Team provided professional guides as well as a porter for two of us. Deepak was the guide and he was a good guide. He knows where we are going and He takes great care of us. His top priority is our safety and health. The householder is akash; he is amazing and powerful. We like to have traffic and leadership.
I hope one day I can visit Nepal again and book a mountain treks Nepal. I recommend that anyone planning a trip to Nepal should contact them.

January 15, 2021 at 11:41 pmUpper Mustang trip with Mountain Treks Nepal
From my very first contact with Ram I felt confident that we were in safe reliable hands. Due to covid we had to rearrange our original dates and Ram was very accommodating.
we went through the details of our trek and met our guide Deepak. We had also opted for a day tour of Kathmandhu which was excellent, the owner took us on the tour and we felt me maximized our day.
Our trek to Upper Mustang was better than expected, the tea houses were all wonderful, again we had to make adjustments on the trek due to some of our requests and also due to events outside of our control. Deepak responded quickly to these to ensure that we were still able to see all of Upper Mustang and return safely to Pokhara.
I would not hesitate to recommend Mountain Teks Nepal and Team

April 21, 2019 at 11:02 pmGeat trip to Upper Mustang
Mountain treks Nepal . I originally planned to go to Upper Mustang for the Tij festival, but they beat me to it! The trip was well organized and the tour guide and driver were very nice. All the extras are great bonuses, but Upper Mustang is an area worth visiting. Traveling in a spacious air-conditioned vehicle, we traveled through the mountains in complete safety and learned a lot about the area. The food was great and the entire trip was handled very professionally. Mountain Treks Nepal is my top recommendation and I will definitely be working with them on future trips with
