Trip Overview
The Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake via Cho La Pass – 16 Days is one of the most rewarding and complete high-altitude trekking adventures in Nepal. This journey combines the legendary Everest Base Camp, turquoise Gokyo Lakes, the panoramic viewpoint of Gokyo Ri, the challenging Cho La Pass, and the iconic sunrise hike to Kala Patthar.
Unlike the standard Everest Base Camp Trek, this adventure follows a spectacular circuit through the quieter Gokyo Valley before crossing Cho La Pass and joining the classic Everest Base Camp trail. It offers trekkers a deeper experience of the Khumbu region, including Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, suspension bridges, Himalayan glaciers, and unforgettable mountain scenery.
The journey begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla at 2,860m. From Lukla, the trek follows the Dudh Koshi Valley through Phakding and Namche Bazaar. After an acclimatization day in Namche, the route heads toward the peaceful villages of Phortse, Machhermo, and Gokyo.
At Gokyo, trekkers visit the beautiful turquoise lakes and hike to Gokyo Ri at 5,357m. The summit offers a spectacular panorama of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.
The adventure continues across Cho La Pass at approximately 5,420m. This is one of the most challenging yet exciting sections of the trek, especially when snow and ice are present. After crossing the pass, the trail joins the Everest Base Camp route through Dzongla, Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and Everest Base Camp.
The trek concludes with an early-morning hike to Kala Patthar at 5,545m, one of the best viewpoints for close-up views of Mount Everest. With proper acclimatization, a professional guide, and good physical preparation, this 16-day Everest Base Camp Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek becomes an unforgettable Himalayan achievement.
Preparation for Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake via Cho La Pass
Guides and Porters
Guides play an essential role during the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake via Cho La Pass. This route involves high altitude, long walking days, glacier crossings, and the challenging Cho La Pass. Our experienced and licensed guides help manage the pace, explain local culture, monitor altitude-related symptoms, and make the trek safer and more enjoyable.
Our guides are familiar with the Everest region, weather conditions, lodge arrangements, permits, and emergency procedures. They also provide useful information about Sherpa culture, Buddhist traditions, mountains, glaciers, and villages along the route.
Porters carry the main trekking luggage so that trekkers can walk more comfortably with only a small daypack. Normally, one porter is assigned for every two trekkers. This helps reduce physical strain and allows trekkers to preserve energy for acclimatization and high-altitude walking.
Permits for Everest Base Camp Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek
Trekkers need the following permits for this journey:
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit
The Sagarmatha National Park Permit allows entry into the protected Everest region, including Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Valley, and Kala Patthar.
The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit is required for trekkers entering the local Everest region through Lukla.
Mountain Treks Nepal arranges the necessary permits for the trek.
Best Time for Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake via Cho La Pass
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this trek.
Spring: March to May
Spring offers pleasant daytime temperatures, clear mountain views, blooming rhododendrons in lower forests, and stable trekking conditions. It is also the Everest climbing season, so trekkers may see expedition teams at Everest Base Camp.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is one of the most popular trekking seasons in Nepal. The skies are generally clear after the monsoon, the trails are dry, and the mountain views are excellent. This is an ideal season for Gokyo Ri, Cho La Pass, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar.
Winter and Monsoon
Winter treks are possible for experienced trekkers, but Cho La Pass can become heavily snow-covered and may be difficult to cross. During monsoon, flights can be delayed, visibility may be limited, and lower trails can become wet and slippery.
Accommodation During the Trek
Accommodation during the trek is arranged in local mountain lodges and teahouses. Most rooms are simple twin-sharing rooms with basic beds, blankets, and pillows.
Facilities become more basic as the altitude increases. In places such as Dzongla, Dragnag, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, rooms, toilets, Wi-Fi, charging facilities, and hot showers can be limited.
In Kathmandu, accommodation is provided in a comfortable hotel. Trekkers can request a single room supplement, subject to availability.
Drinking Water
Drinking enough water is extremely important during high-altitude trekking. Trekkers should drink at least three to four litres of water each day to remain hydrated.
Bottled water, boiled water, and filtered water are available in most lodges along the route. However, the price increases as the trek reaches higher altitudes.
To reduce plastic waste in the Himalayas, we recommend carrying a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder. Water purification tablets, filters, or UV purifiers can be used when filling water from local taps or natural sources.
Communication and Internet
Internet and communication services are available at many lodges, but they may be slow, paid, or unavailable because of weather and altitude. Wi-Fi is generally available in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, Gokyo, and some other major stops.
Trekkers can buy an Ncell or NTC SIM card in Kathmandu before starting the trek. Network coverage may work in some villages, but it is not reliable in all high-altitude areas.
Charging electronic devices is available at most lodges for an extra charge. Carrying a power bank or solar charger is highly recommended.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for this trek. Your insurance policy should cover high-altitude trekking, medical treatment, helicopter evacuation, trip cancellation, and emergency rescue above 5,500m.
Mountain Treks Nepal does not provide insurance directly. Trekkers should arrange comprehensive travel insurance before arriving in Nepal.
Everest Base Camp Gokyo Cho La Pass Trek Difficulty
The Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Lake via Cho La Pass is graded as a very strenuous trek. It is more demanding than the standard Everest Base Camp Trek because it includes Gokyo Ri, Cho La Pass, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar.
Trekkers usually walk for five to eight hours each day. Some days, especially the Cho La Pass crossing day, can be longer and more challenging.
The trek does not require technical climbing experience, but trekkers should be physically fit, mentally prepared, and comfortable walking on steep, rocky, uneven, and occasionally icy trails.
Previous trekking experience at high altitude is strongly recommended. A fitness routine with walking, hiking, stair climbing, cardio exercises, and strength training should begin at least six to eight weeks before the trek.
