Trip Overview

The Short Gosaikunda Trek offers trekkers a quick adventure that allows them to access the beauty of the Langtang region in a few days trek. Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days passes through different types of sceneries- green woods, terraced fields, pastures on high meadows and lakes. In between some of the most impressive mountains the Langtang range has to offer, such as Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and the Annapurna massif, one can view excellent trekking. With its traditional stone houses and Buddhist monasteries, the small Tamang villages on the way help to add to the cultural aspect.

The main spiritual attraction of this trek is Gosaikunda Lake, which is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The journey is a mixture of adventure and culture since this will also provide them with the chance to meet friendly local communities familiar with their ways, not excluding their ancient monasteries. Generally, Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days is suited for the trekking experience of moderately skilled trekkers because it does not have overly technical terrain but is still a rewarding challenge with regard to altitude gained and an impressive route. This is the perfect trek for a short but comprehensive experience in the Himalayas.

Preparation for Short Gosaikunda Trek

Permits and Regulation

To go for the Short Gosaikunda Trek, you must acquire two permits: Langtang National Park Entry Permit and Trekkers’ Information System (TIMS) Card.

The cost of Langtang National Park Entry Permit is NPR 3000 for international trekkers. Similarly, NPR 1000 will be charged for the SAARC Nationals.

Similarly, Trekkers’ Information System (TIMS) Card costs you NPR 3000 per person. You can get these permits from Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu.

Guides and Porters for Short Gosaikunda Trek

It is worth hiring a local guide or porter to make the Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days more enjoyable. A guide will offer cultural, traditional and geographical insights and provide navigation along the way to prevent you from straying off the right path, especially in places where way markers are scarce. Local guides know the terrain and weather patterns, thus making Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days  adventure safe and an exciting experience when they impart their knowledge about the area. They act as a local translator in the villages, clearing the language barrier since most of the villagers speak only Tamang or Nepali dialects.

Trekkers carrying heavy loads should highly consider hiring porters. The porter can help alleviate the burden of your rucksack, making the trek far more pleasant. They carry your kit while you admire the scenery and revel in the physical challenges of your trek. More importantly, hiring a porter directly benefits the local people as it creates employment opportunities. Responsible tourism should be able to provide for decent equipment and wages to all porters.

Communication and Internet during Short Gosaikunda Trek

Communications and Internet services are short and limited on the Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days. Up at higher altitudes, mobile reception may be poor or non-existent beyond Syabrubesi. As you start your journey into certain bigger villages such as Syabrubesi and Gatlang, you can get some mobile network coverage usually provided by local providers like Ncell or Nepal Telecom.

It is advised to check with your mobile provider about international roaming options before coming as it would help be connected during the Gosaikunda Short Trek. However, internet access in more remote regions exists in some teahouses and guesthouses; speed and access are never guaranteed. Occasionally, providers offer Wi-Fi, but the signal is either slow or costly.

For those wishing to still keep up with family or work during the Short Gosaikunda Trek, the option of local SIM cards in Kathmandu or Syabrubesi may be ideal. Satellite phone rent is available in Kathmandu for those requiring more steady communications for emergencies.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one important component to prepare for when going on the Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days. We highly recommend obtaining full travel insurance for trekking at high altitudes. Your insurance policy should cover against emergency medical coverage, trip cancellation, and damage to or loss of personal luggage.

Ensure that trekking at higher altitudes is included in your policy by consulting your insurance company. Many policies exclude treks above certain altitudes. In addition, travel insurance would cover delays, cancellations, or interruptions of the journey, all often attributed to weather conditions in the Himalayas. And finally, don’t forget to carry a hard copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact numbers in case of a claim before the trek embarks.

    Detailed Itinerary

On the first day of the Short Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days, you will travel to Dhunche, the District Headquarters of Rasuwa. The road journey from Kathmandu to Dhunche is an excellent way to get a first impression of the country’s landscape and people. When you are out of the colourful capital, the landscape gradually changes into slopes, cultivated land and forests. The drive passes by the Trishuli River through valleys providing beautiful sights of the blue water river. There are lovely villages en route and markets, and sometimes you catch a glimpse of the Ganesh Himal in the distance. This trip takes between 6 to 7 hours; it is not just a mere transfer but an eye-opening tour of the different terrains of Nepal.

Dhunche, at an elevation of 2030m, is a busy gateway for trekkers planning to visit the Langtang and Gosaikunda areas. The town has numerous little stores and restaurants selling traditional foods. You can explore its narrow roads, communicate with people, and buy some necessary equipment for further trekking. Dhunche also has a few ancient temples and stupas to provide you with a glimpse of the cultural history of the region.

The options for lodging in Dhunche vary from low-key local lodges to mid-range trekker lodges. Towards evening, the mountain air becomes very chilly, and this acts as the backdrop for the day’s experience. The panorama view of the hills from Dhunche to watch the sunset looks very quiet, and gives a break to the mind before the trekking days.

The trek from Dhunche to Sing Gompa (Chandanbari) is gradually steep, with a view of pines, oaks, and rhododendron forests throughout the way. Occasionally, the trail follows through some dense forests, steep rocky cliffs and narrow gorges but then opens up through fine meadows and clearings that offer excellent views of the Langtang Himal and Ganesh Himal. This segment is relatively moderate in difficulty, which makes it an interesting one to kick-start the trek.

Half way through the hike, you will encounter basic facilities like eating places and small huts where you can momentarily relax with the beautiful scenery of the surroundings. At an altitude of about 3,330 meters, a beautiful landscape welcomes its calm and serene atmosphere, as well as the historical and religious meaning of Sing Gompa. The village has been named after the historic monastery that is a central part of the community.

Aside from the monastery, Sing Gompa is also famous for its cheese factory, where people can try out fresh yak cheese – a speciality. The village has local tea houses that guarantee hot meals and reasonable prices and where one may spend a night or two. The view from Sing Gompa during the sunset is breathtaking; you get the feeling of the alpine glow on the peaks surrounding the monastery.

On the third day of the Short Gosaikunda Trek, you will hike from Sing Gompa to Gosaikunda. The trail is steep with much of it passing through the timberline before reaching the alpine tundra. As you ascend further up, the atmosphere becomes rare, and the panoramic views of the mountains as Langtang and Ganesh Himal surround you. The trail goes through small features such as Laurebina, where trekkers can take a break to digest and make sense of the incredible views.

As you get closer to Gosaikunda, the terrain becomes more alpine, and the area has other small glacial lakes, such as Saraswati Kunda and Bhairav Kunda. All these lakes have their myths. Thus, the presence of myth adds a sacred dimension. Gosaikunda is a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Buddhists, nestling at an altitude of 4480m. The lake shines blue and the surrounding mountains white with snow and it really looks like a dream.

The environment of Gosaikunda is serene and majestic. Most of the pilgrims and the trekkers use the lake as a place to practice meditation or to sit and carry out some spiritual exercises. The facilities in the area are rather simple and it is quite possible to find some lodging that will allow for a short break and to get used to environmental conditions.

After having a quiet morning on the shores of Gosaikunda, you will start the trek down to Deurali. Looking back down the way you came, the trail will slowly gradually traverse through alpine meadows again and back in to the forest. The same route provides a different view of the terrain, and you may get to see some of the local wildlife, such as the Himalayan thar, and some fine birdlife, including pheasants.

As you approach Deurali, the flora and fauna become dense and instead of silence, you can hear the trilling of birds. Deurali, which is a small village, is surrounded by forests and is therefore used by trekkers to rest. It has quite simple lodges called teahouses where warm foods and accommodation for the night can be purchased. It is the right time to glance at the wonderful experience that has been had so far and start planning for the final track to Dhunche Bazaar the next day.

On the last day of Short Gosaikunda Trek, you will return back to Dhunche through the same route. The descent is a lovely hike because trekkers can enjoy the brilliant green color of the landscape and the large mountain ranges one more time. On the way up you are likely to meet other hikers and there are locals that bring a lot of cheer on to the journey.

Dhunche is the kind of feeling after covering long distance treks in the hills, the town offers a welcoming feel after hours and sometimes days of trekking. Here you can rest, have a good meal, and even visit some markets before getting on a ride back to Kathmandu. On the way back there is also an opportunity to enjoy the views of the beautiful nature of central Nepal.

Finally, when you reach Kathmandu, this trekking becomes officially over. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.
