Trip Overview
The Everest Base Camp Trek From Surke 13 Days is an innovative hybrid itinerary crafted for smart travelers who want to skip the unpredictable Kathmandu-to-Lukla outward flight delays while still enjoying a quick return flight at the end of their journey. By traveling overland by 4×4 Jeep from Kathmandu via Salleri and Kharikhola to Surke, this 13-day EBC route bypasses early flight cancellations, offers a gentle physical warm-up through lower Sherpa hamlets, and seamlessly connects to the classic Khumbu trail at Phakding.
This route combines scenic overland driving with high-altitude Himalayan trekking. You will ascend through iconic stopovers like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, Pheriche, and Lobuche, complete with two dedicated acclimatization rest days to optimize your body’s adaptation to thin air. Stand at Everest Base Camp (5,364m) on the Khumbu Glacier and summit Kala Patthar (5,545m) for world-renowned panoramic sunrise views over Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori. After completing your circuit in Lukla, you enjoy an effortless morning flight back to Kathmandu. Guided by Mountain Treks Nepal’s veteran local Sherpa team, this hybrid package balances weather reliability, cultural immersion, and expedition efficiency.
Preparation For Everest Base Camp Trek From Surke
The 13-day Surke-route EBC trek involves 10 active days of high-altitude mountain hiking over rocky trails, steep stone steps, and glacial moraines. We recommend beginning physical conditioning 6 to 8 weeks prior to departure. Focus on leg strength (squats, lunges, step-ups) and cardiovascular endurance (running, cycling, stair climbing with a 5–10 kg weighted backpack). Prior high-altitude hiking experience above 3,000 meters is beneficial, though the built-in acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Pheriche ensure a gradual adaptation process.
Guides and Porters
Experienced local leadership is critical for navigating both the lower Solu Jeep tracks and the high-altitude Khumbu trails. Mountain Treks Nepal provides licensed, English-speaking Sherpa guides trained in wilderness safety, high-altitude health protocols, and pulse oximeter monitoring. To ensure you can trek comfortably with only a light daypack containing hydration and personal essentials, our porters handle the heavy lifting, carrying your main luggage (up to 12 kg per trekker) along the trail.
Permits for 13 Days EBC Trek From Surke
Trekking into the Khumbu region requires two mandatory government permits, both handled directly by Mountain Treks Nepal:
-
Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: Grants access to the UNESCO World Heritage site protecting high-altitude flora, fauna, and mountain terrain. The fee is NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals, NPR 1,500 for SAARC nationals, and NPR 100 for Nepali citizens (plus applicable local taxes).
-
Pasang Lhamu Municipality Entry Permit: A regional government entry fee of NPR 3,000 per person for foreign trekkers.
Best Time for EBC Trek From Surke
-
Spring (March to May): Excellent weather, stable trail conditions, and vibrant rhododendron blooms in lower elevations. High-altitude temperatures range from 10°C during the day to -10°C at night near Gorak Shep.
-
Autumn (September to December): Clear post-monsoon skies offering razor-sharp mountain visibility. Daytime temperatures average 12°C in lower valleys, dropping to -15°C at high settlements.
-
Winter (December to February): Quiet trails and crisp morning views, though nighttime temperatures at Gorak Shep can plummet to -20°C.
Altitude Chart

The Everest Base Camp Trek From Surke is a 13-day hybrid overland and trekking expedition that bypasses the flight to Lukla, offering a gradual altitude gain through the lower and upper Khumbu regions. Starting on Day 1 with an overland jeep drive from Kathmandu (1,350 m / 4,429 ft) to Kharikhola (2,137 m / 7,011 ft), the trek begins on Day 2 from Surke up to Phakding (2,935 m / 9,629 ft) before climbing to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m / 11,286 ft). Following an acclimatization hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m / 12,729 ft), the trail ascends steadily through Tengboche (3,867 m / 12,687 ft) and incorporates two nights at Pheriche (4,310 m / 14,140 ft) for crucial high-altitude adaptation. The line continues upward via Lobuche (4,900 m / 16,076 ft) to reach Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft) on Day 9, before reaching its absolute maximum elevation on Day 10 during the sunrise push to Kala Patthar (5,545 m / 18,192 ft). The journey concludes with a rapid descent through Pheriche and Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860 m / 9,383 ft), finishing with a return flight to Kathmandu on Day 13.
Accommodation During The Trek
Accommodation along the route consists of local teahouses family-run mountain lodges offering clean, twin-share rooms with wooden beds, mattresses, and blankets. Lower stopovers like Kharikhola, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar offer options with attached bathrooms, hot showers, and Wi-Fi. Facilities in higher villages like Lobuche and Gorak Shep are basic, featuring shared toilets and communal dining areas warmed by central yak-dung stoves.
Drinking Water
Hydration is your single best defense against Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Sealed bottled water is available at teahouses along the route, but prices increase with altitude. To minimize single-use plastic waste inside Sagarmatha National Park, we advise bringing two reusable water bottles along with water purification tablets, Chlorine Dioxide drops, or a UV filter (Steripen) to safely treat local water.
Communication and Internet
Mobile network coverage (NTC and Ncell) is available across most of the lower trail up to Pangboche. In higher settlements like Lobuche and Gorak Shep, teahouses offer prepaid Everest Link Wi-Fi cards (approx. NPR 600–1000). Charging facilities for phones and power banks are available in teahouse common areas for a small fee.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for joining the 13-day EBC trek. Your insurance policy must cover high-altitude trekking up to 6,000 meters and explicitly include emergency helicopter evacuation and medical repatriation.
Trip Difficulty
Graded as Strenuous / Demanding, this 13-day itinerary combines a long 4×4 Jeep road journey with multi-day high-altitude trekking. Starting the trek below Lukla at Surke gives your body a gradual elevation buildup before tackling the steeper ascents above 4,000 meters.
