A Legend Among the Stars: In Memory of Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we at Mountain Treks Nepal pay tribute to legendary mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja and the brave members of his expedition team following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak (8,051m) in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.
The global climbing community and the nation of Nepal have lost an extraordinary icon a leader whose courage, discipline, and vision redefined what was possible in high-altitude mountaineering.
A Trailblazer Who Redefined the Limits of Endurance

Born in Dana, Myagdi, and having served as a British Gurkha and Special Boat Service (SBS) operative, Nimsdai brought a unique blend of tactical precision, resilience, and passion to the Himalayas.
He captured the world’s imagination in 2019 through his historic Project Possible (14/7), summiting all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just six months and six days. Chronicled in the globally acclaimed documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, his feats brought long-overdue international recognition to Nepali mountaineers, Sherpa guides, and high-altitude porters.
From leading the first historical winter ascent of K2 to spearheading high-altitude rescues, Nimsdai’s mantra “Nothing is impossible” inspired millions across Nepal and around the globe.
Honoring All Lost Souls
We extend our deepest condolences to the families, loved ones, and colleagues of all those lost in the Broad Peak tragedy. We mourn not only Nimsdai but also his trusted Nepali climbing partners, including Pur Bahadur Gurung (Yukta) and Nima Sherpa, along with international expedition members who shared the ultimate passion for the peaks.
As a local agency dedicated to the mountains of Nepal, we honor their bravery, sacrifice, and lifelong dedication to high-altitude exploration.
A Lasting Legacy
Nimsdai’s physical journey on earth has come to an end, but his spirit will forever echo across the snow-capped summits of the Himalayas and Karakorams. His dedication to elevating the name of Nepal on the global stage will continue to guide future generations of climbers and trekking enthusiasts.
Rest in Peace, Nimsdai. May your spirit rest among the highest peaks.
The mountains have lost a legend, but the sky has gained a shining star. Rest in peace, Nims Dai. Your courage will inspire generations😢🕊️
