Trip Overview
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and rewarding Himalayan adventures. This 17-day journey takes you deep into the eastern Himalayas, through the untouched wilderness of Makalu Barun National Park, and finally to the base of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest mountain in the world.
Unlike the busy Everest and Annapurna trekking routes, the Makalu Base Camp Trek offers a peaceful, raw, and less-crowded trekking experience. The trail passes through beautiful villages, terraced farmlands, rhododendron forests, river valleys, alpine meadows, yak pastures, rocky landscapes, and glacier-fed terrain.
The trek begins with a scenic flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a drive to Num. From there, the trail gradually ascends through Seduwa, Tashigaon, Khongma Danda, Dobato, Yangle Kharka, Langmale Kharka, and finally reaches Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters / 15,978 feet.
This trek is best suited for physically fit trekkers who want a real Himalayan wilderness experience away from the regular tourist crowds. With dramatic mountain views, rich biodiversity, remote villages, and the powerful presence of Mount Makalu, this journey is perfect for adventure seekers looking for something truly special in Nepal.
Preparation for Makalu Base Camp Trek
What Permits Are Required?
The Makalu Base Camp Treks are located in the Makalu Barun National Park, which is a restricted area that aims to protect the biodiversity of the region. Trekkers wishing to visit this protected area within the Makalu region have to obtain permits. There are two permits that the trek demands: The Makalu Barun National Park Conservation Area Permit and The Trekkers’ Information Management System (TIMS) Permit.
The permit fees are based on the applicants’ nationality. The Makalu Barun National Park Conservation Area Permit is 1500 Rs for the SAARC citizens and 3000 Rs for other foreign visitors. Likewise, the TIMS Permit costs 1000 Rs for SAARC nationals and 2000 Rs for others foreign visitors.
Why are guides and porters important for Makalu Base Camp Trek?
The Makalu Base Camp Trek led in the heart of the Himalayas in Nepal is an amazing adventure even if one needs to put a lot of effort into reaching this point. Guides have great importance in this regard as they ensure trekker’s safety and enrich the trekking experience. They have an intense knowledge of the terrain, the climatic conditions, and the societal practices around the Makalu region. They assist in various ways, help in local interactions, and deal with unforeseen circumstances such as altitude sickness or unnatural changes in the plan.
Porters also play an essential part in the journey as well. They are responsible for carrying all the heavy load making sure that the trekkers only enjoy the fantastic views. Porters are necessary in the Makalu area since the terrain is rugged, high-altitude, and the paths can be steep and very unforgiving.
Best season for Makalu Base Camp Trek
The best time for the Makalu Base Camp Trek is during spring and autumn.
Spring: March to May
Spring offers pleasant weather, blooming rhododendron forests, longer daylight, and beautiful mountain views.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn is one of the best seasons for clear skies, stable weather, and excellent Himalayan visibility.
Winter and monsoon treks are possible but more challenging. Winter can bring extreme cold and snow at higher altitudes, while monsoon can bring rain, slippery trails, clouds, leeches, and possible flight delays.
Altitude Chart

This 17-Day Makalu Base Camp Trek altitude chart beautifully maps out a highly challenging and remote Himalayan journey, tracking your progression from the low valleys straight into the high-alpine zone. Your adventure kicks off at 1,400 meters in Kathmandu, moving through the transit hub of Tumlingtar and Num (1,560m) before dropping slightly into the river basin at Seduwa (1,500m). From Day 4, the chart illustrates a demanding and sharp upward trajectory as you conquer massive elevation gains, climbing steeply through Tashigaon (2,070m) and Khongma Danda (3,560m) to cross a high mountain ridge at Dobato (3,860m). The line then drops slightly into a horizontal plateau at Yangle Kharka (3,610m) on Days 7 and 8, visually highlighting your essential acclimatization rest day where no altitude is gained. Moving forward, the profile surges upward once again through Langmale Kharka (4,410m) until it crests at the pinnacle of your trek: the majestic Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters. The flat crest across Days 10 and 11 signifies your dedicated exploration time directly beneath the towering south face of Mt. Makalu. The return leg of the chart mirrors your ascent with a rapid downward slope as you quickly shed altitude through the familiar stops of Yangle Kharka, Khongma Danda, and Seduwa, hitting the absolute lowest point of the journey at the Tumlingtar airstrip (518m) before a final vertical step brings you back to 1,400 meters in Kathmandu for your departure.
Makalu Base Camp Trek Difficulty
The Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered a strenuous trek. It is suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and previous hiking or trekking experience.
The trek includes long walking days, steep ascents and descents, high-altitude sections, remote trails, basic accommodation, and limited facilities. Some days require 7 to 9 hours of walking on rugged mountain terrain.
Trekkers should prepare with regular walking, cardio exercise, stair climbing, strength training, and endurance activities before joining this trek. A positive mindset and proper acclimatization are also important for completing the journey safely.
Communication During Makalu Base Camp Trek
One of the most complicated things is communicating during the Makalu Trek 17 Days. This is because of the remoteness of the region as the internet services are not available too often. Mobile networks are limited, and there are only a few spots along the trail where coverage is offered, mostly by Nepal Telecom (NTC) or Ncell. Most of the teahouses, but for an extra charge, offer WIFI services, although the speed is often slow.
Importance of Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a must for the Makalu Base Camp Trek because of the high altitude, rough geographical location and difficulties experienced there. Cover for the emergencies such as medical evacuation, accidents and Alpha trips, as helicopters are the only quick means of escape in emergencies, should be included in these policies. Canceling the cover is also necessary to some extent, as unpredictable weather conditions often disrupt flights to and from the region.
You can purchase travel insurance from Allainz, World Trips, Travelex, and many other companies.
Internet, Electricity and Hot Shower
The Makalu region is remote, so internet and mobile network coverage are limited. Some lower villages may have mobile signals, but the network becomes weaker or unavailable at higher altitudes.
Charging facilities may be available in some teahouses for an extra cost. Hot showers may also be available in selected places, but they are not guaranteed everywhere. Trekkers should carry a power bank, extra batteries, and enough cash for personal expenses.
Drinking Water During the Trek
Bottled water may be available in some lower villages, but it becomes expensive and less available at higher elevations. Trekkers can buy boiled water from teahouses or use water purification tablets, filters, or purification drops.
To reduce plastic waste, we recommend carrying a reusable water bottle.
Food During Makalu Base Camp Trek
During the trek, meals are served at local teahouses. Common food options include dal bhat, noodles, fried rice, soup, pasta, potatoes, eggs, Tibetan bread, tea, coffee, and seasonal local meals.
At lower elevations, food options are more varied. As the trail moves higher and more remote, the menu becomes limited because supplies are difficult to transport. Dal bhat is highly recommended because it is filling, nutritious, and suitable for long trekking days.
Accommodation During Makalu Base Camp Trek
Accommodation during the Makalu Base Camp Trek is mostly in basic teahouses and lodges. Rooms are usually simple twin-sharing rooms with basic beds and blankets.
Facilities become more basic as the altitude increases. Toilets are usually shared, and hot showers may be available in some places for an extra cost. Trekkers are advised to carry a warm sleeping bag for comfort, especially at higher elevations.
In Kathmandu, accommodation is provided in a hotel based on the package service standard.
